True or false? Every 26 seconds a child is sold into a lifetime of slavery for the first time. Alarmingly, this is a true and very sad statistic. “Destiny Rescue exists to Rescue, Restore, Protect, Empower and be a Voice for the Voiceless…Destiny Rescue rescues children from red light districts, brothels and sexually abusive situation; Destiny Rescue provides rescued children the intensive care and love they need to recover from the traumatic effects of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation [as well as] medical help, counselling, schooling, vocational training and all daily needs required to be integrated back into society successfully.” ( – Destiny Rescue’s Mission Statement).
What an exceptional charity! As a fundraising effort, Destiny Rescue has released Destiny Coffee coffee beans, the profits of which go back into this great cause. It was with much pleasure and delight we were given a kilo of these coffee beans to review. Here at https://internationalcoffeepreview.com we decided to share this tasting with some of our supports and fellow coffee lovers and gave them some beans to take away to try a ‘blind tasting’ (that is, we did not give them any information about the coffee beans whatsoever). All tried these beans through their own coffee machines at home. The ‘coffee connoisseurs’ found the beans more on the “rustic” side, whilst our self-professed coffee ‘punters’ (those who have a novice to intermediately developed coffee palate) found it “good” and enjoyed it immensely.
I tried these beans, firstly, as an espresso. Visually, it had a thick and good amount of crème. Indeed, all of our tasters had the same experience and opinion. Regarding the taste, as an espresso I found it a little sharp for my palate. However, I usually do find 100% Arabica beans (which is what these beans are) too sharp for me as an espresso. Of course, this could be well tempered and countered by adding milk to the coffee and enjoyed as a ‘milk coffee’.
As for the aroma, all of our tasters (and I) agreed the aroma of the beans was spectacular: As soon as you opened the packet, the waft of the beans’ magnificent nutty aroma hit you immediately in a moment of sheer coffee ecstasy. I also found the scent had a luscious buttery undertone. (Even my cat Zou Zou found the scent irresistible!)
Given the impressive aroma, I thought to try the beans using a different brewing method and used a plunger. As a plunger coffee (black with no milk), I personally found it really delightful, delicious and easy to ‘Sit Sip and Savour’: The nuttiness of the bean really shone through here and I was glad to have had the foresight to attempt a different method.
The above tastings are exemplary of how coffee is a personal journey, of how our palates vary from one person to another, and of why we should try coffee beans different ways and through different methods to find the best way to brew coffee that suits your own personal palate.
As previously mentioned, the coffee beans are 100% Arabica (hence, the sharpness of the bean), are grown in Papua New Guinea at a high altitude and roasted here in Australia to a medium roast.
We rate this coffee as being well suited as the everyday office or workplace coffee break latte or cappuccino. For its visual and crème, we rate it 3/3; for its aroma, we also rate it 3/3; and for its taste the rating by our tasters varies from fair to great. However, given the fantastic charity and cause this coffee is raising money for, we rate Destiny Coffee an overall 3/3.
We also highly urge corporates and workplaces to ditch the coffee they are using and support Destiny Coffee: The young girls you save will thank you!
